A few of my favourite things (in this cake recipe)

Chocolate FingersWas experimenting in the kitchen as usual and made a very moist cake. I didn’t weigh anything, but as it turned out so well, I will try and make it again sometime with proper measurements.

  • sesame seeds, maybe 60g
  • almonds, about 40g
  • cacao nibs, 20g
  • small piece of vanilla bean

First I ground the above ingredients in my nut/seed mill, then I put into the food processor with the following:

I processed this for a while and then added about 40g of cacao butter, which I melted first (so it was liquid) and processed until the mixture formed a cake like consistency.

There was a bit of cacao butter left over so I decided to make some chocolate to go on top, I added cacao powder, carob powder, lucuma, mesquite and agave. (See this post if you’ve not made chocolate before and need more instructions.)

Put in the fridge for a while to set and then devour!

The Encounter book review

I’ve been busy getting the next Funky Raw magazine finished, but it’s done now and at the printers so maybe a bit more time for this blog now! Here’s a sneak preview, a book I reviewed which features in the magazine.

This is a novel, but also so much more than a novel. The idea behind the book is to spread channelled information in a format where positive information is a natural part of the story. Getting alternative information into popular culture, whether this be in the form of novels, films or music is something I’ve spoken with a few friends about in the past, so I was excited when I got a phone call about this book and was offered a copy to review.

The Encounter by Hanna HorrellThe story follows Carrie, an artist who is very psychically aware. She has been hearing voices for some time and finally meets the source of the voices, an alien being called Amos who gives her the task of bringing people together to spread light into the world. The story is woven around Carrie’s ability to channel information from alien beings and the ‘living library’ and the message of co-operation and moving forward in a positive way comes through very well. The story basically tries to include as many positive ideas as possible, including things like growing your own organic food, positive music, energy healing, etc.

None of this detracts from the story, which has lots of interest and sub plots to keep the reader engaged throughout.

In some places, too much irrelevant detail is given, especially for us raw fooders, the detail about what food was being cooked including lots of meat, was quite distracting. Surely people as highly evolved as the lead characters in this story would have worked out that at least vegetarianism was the way forward!

I really enjoyed this book and as I was coming to the last few pages I was thinking ‘I hope the sequel will be out soon’!

Highly recommended, and if there are any authors out there, read this book and then write your own which also includes messages about eating healthily!

Lime Flowers

I just ate some lime flowers for the first time, wow, they are delicious. Very sweet with lots of subtle flavours, I recommend you look out for them.

There is lots of info on lime flowers on the PFAF website including “Lime flowers are said to develop narcotic properties as they age and so they should only be harvested when freshly opened” so be careful!

He’s still awake…

Check out the live webcam of Tony in at the Studio Bar in Penzanace, he’s been awake for 10 days and 8 hours, the current record is 11 days, it looks like he will have no problem beating this record. Lots of media interest, you can see photographers from national newspapers shooting him and listen in as he does various interviews on the phone…

Sleepless in… Penzanace

The research of Tony Wright has fascinated me since I first came across it and it has influenced my life in many ways. His basic idea is that the left half of the human brain is damaged but in control, while the right half has some amazing abilities which we are mostly unaware of because the left half of the brain doesn’t allow us. There are various techniques for accessing the right brain, notably things like meditation, but what Tony has found most powerful is sleep deprivation, which is what has led him to his next experiment, to try and stay awake for 11 days (and by doing so break the current world record). This experiment starts in 2 days on Monday May 14th and if you live near Penzance, Cornwall (England) you can go and visit Tony and see how he’s doing. See the website www.sleeplessinpenzance.co.uk for more info.

The other exciting development is at last the publishing of Tony’s book Left In The Dark (Edit: Now called Return to the Brain of Eden). I can’t recommend this book enough. Go and buy it now and don’t put it down until you have read it all the way through (ok, you can have a break to have a nice raw snack and go to the loo;-).

Not so frequently asked questions

I got this email today from a customer I had just sent some maca powder to:

“Should the raw powder be stored in the internet, or an airtight tin?”

My reply, keep it in an airtight container of course, if you store it in the internet, the mouse might eat it!

(I’m not making this up, someone really asked me that question!)

Reclaim Your Mind

Watch this video by Terrence McKenna, it might be the last one you need to watch. “We have to stop consuming our culture, we have to create culture. Don’t watch TV, don’t read magazines … create your own…”

Young coconut and hemp milk

So, I’ve recently being getting into young coconuts, they’re available in some local shops now and I worked out how to get into them! Today I made my morning hemp milk with young coconut water instead of water and it was delicious. This is what went in:

  • 100g hemp seeds, soaked overnight, drained and rinsed
  • soak water from dried goji berries, currants, bilberries and a fig
  • 1/2 an orange
  • young coconut water

Blend and strain (through a muslin bag or sprout/hemp milk bag). Simple as that and delicious. I then used this hemp milk to make chocolate pudding, I know I’ve given this recipe before, but it changes all the time so here’s my current version:

Put everything into the blender along with the hemp milk and blend until smooth! There is no correct way to make chocolate pudding, just experiment and see what you like. I make it different every day!

How to get into a young (green) coconut

Many people say to me that they don’t know how to open coconuts. Well, I found this video which includes a part about how to open a young coconut. Note that this coconut has been “shaved”, ie it’s green outer shell has been removed, if the coconut you buy still has it’s green shell, the shop might shave it for you if you ask (depends on what kind of shop it is).

Edit: Video has been removed

This video is from Audry’s Filling Up on Life blog which is great, lots of raw food and gardening/permaculture info.
